Emergency Classifications

There are four classes of emergencies at a nuclear power plant.  Emergency officials and the news media may use these terms:

  • Notification of an Unusual Event: You will not have to do anything.  This means that a minor problem has taken place with no danger to the public.  Federal, state and county officials will be notified of the problem.
  • Alert: An Alert is also a minor problem which will not require protection outside of plant property.  Federal, state and county officials will be advised of the Alert and will stand by.
  • Site Area Emergency: You may have to take action.  If you do, the warning sirens will be activated.  Turn to radio station WBAP, 820 AM or KFJZ, 870 AM (en Espanol) for more information.
  • General Emergency: You will most likely need to take action.  The warning sirens will be sounded.  Turn to radio station WBAP, 820 AM or KFJZ, 870 AM (en Espanol) for more information.
